Michael Cade – Olathe Murderer, Kidnapper & Rapist

michael cade, olathe kansas murder, kidnapping and rapistThe Investigation Discovery Channel is featuring this case on an episode of Ice Cold Killers to air this Tuesday, Feb 23, 2016 at 7pm CT.

Michael Cade, 21 at the time, turned the small town of Olathe, Kansas upside down with his actions the night of January 28th, 1983.

He’s a monster. – Paul Duffield

Cade has said he randomly selected John and Carole Duffield’s Olathe home to break into and reign terror on. He entered the home with a two-pound hammer, beating 15 year-old Paul Duffield and leaving him for dead, before moving on to his next child victim. He beat 12 year-old Janelle to death with the same hammer. Kelly, the Duffield’s 17 year-old daughter was forced from the house by Cade. Her body was found 10 days later at Frisco Lake. She had been raped, beaten and left to die alone, in a drainage ditch.

Cade was convicted of two counts of first-degree murder and one count each of rape, aggravated kidnapping, aggravated battery, aggravated burglary and robbery.

Under today’s laws, Cade would be eligible for the death penalty. However, with no death penalty in Kansas at the time, he was sentenced to life and eligible for parole. His first opportunity came in 1998 and again in 2008. Denied both times, with campaigns against his release being led by the Duffield family. His next chance happens in 2018.

John Duffield passed in 1998 and Carole in 2011. All deceased members of the Duffields are laid to rest at Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens in Olathe, KS.

The people in prison have tv(obviously) and ironically enough watch these type of shows all the time. I would imagine another inmate messing him up pretty bad.

If one who is an adult at the time they commit this type of murder, it is most likely that they will do this type crime again. If it is up to me, he would never see the free sky again. I remember these murders and the fear our town went through. I would hope that everyone else will petition the court to do the right thing and keep this savage behind bars.

    Sincerely,
    James Hide

I went to school with Janelle as we were in the same class. In fact two days before she was murdered I gave a speed on her young life. I lived less then a half mile from were this happened. I was so scared I would sleep under my bed. That’s how awful this was. Still so sad.

I went to school with Janelle and I remember the murders a few streets over and the haunting memory of that murderers mug shot! I don’t understand in the legal system why he wasn’t charged with Multiple Counts of Capital Murder. I live in Texas now and he would’ve never had a chance of parole or the ability to say that word and would’ve been sent through with a speed pass to be put to death. The damage that was inflicted that early morning is beyond words and still haunts me today thinking back to that time. I hope Paul is doing well and was able to recover of the physical wounds.

If this guy gets paroled it will be a huge mistake. He should die in prison where he belongs. The fact that he just randomly picked a home and caused such devastation to this poor family should be proof positive that he will offend again. This wasn’t a “crime of passion”! So if he just felt like beating and raping children to death, I’m pretty sure he will “feel like it” again! God Bless Paul Duffield and the rest of this family! Wonder if there’s a way to contact this parole board to voice my opinion about this scum bag. Theses girls parents are no longer here to do so!

I was a friend of Kelly’s and knew Janelle and Paul, as did my sister. I don’t know what is necessary when the parole board makes their decision in 2018, but I would be happy to appear in hopes of keeping this monster in prison. It saddens me that both parents have passed and this animal continues to live and potentially become free. He should never get out.

John Duffield was my Uncle for years before he married Carole. He had other kids with my Aunt. His oldest daughter was reunited with her dad and knew her half sisters and brother when this happened and went to the first parol hearing with Carole to make sure that monster was kept behind bars. But a few years later she died of a suspicious death. I pray that monster never is allowed out.

Are his sentences to be served consecutively? If so, then making parole for one still leaves too many other to follow for him to be granted freedom from prison. I cannot imagine any parole board and governor voting to grant him parole.

Paul was a friend of my brother-in-law. This was the worst thing to happen to our town, ever. The real scary part is that I had eaten pizza with this creep just a few weeks earlier. I didn’t know him, but he was at the table with a big group. How fragile life is. God bless Paul and all affected by this crime. May this monster be locked up forever.

I just cannot believe that there’s the thought that this depraved being could evere be considered for parole. Needs to be kept locked up to protect society. My thoughts go to Paul. He shouldn’t be succumbed to the agony of having to fight a parole plea from such a monster.

In so many cases such as these, the death penalty should be required. Since it wasn’t in place when this horrific slaughter happened, parole should never be granted. I am disgusted that the death penalty was not in place for the victims. And the parole board should not sleep peacefully at night if they grant him parole. Wonder how they would feel if it happened to their family?

NEVER! IIF the two Kelly girls are given their lives back…IF the entire Johnson County community has recovered from this (AND WE HAVE NOT)…IF every parole board member personally guarantees the safety of all young women he might come across…IF the Duffield family is made whole again..then perhaps. But this will never be possible! WHY? Because of Michael Cade!

Watched this tonight on the ID Channel, where segment was titled “A Monster in Kansas”. Stunned to read follow-up info. online. Evolution of my thought about death sentence is that as a practicing Roman Catholic, I’m not supposed to be for it. Still, crimes like matricide, patricide definitely deserve to get death. A humane method would be to inform the murderer exactly when they will be put down, so that they can prepare for the hereafter, if they believe in that. That way, they can pray, ask forgiveness, or whatever, unlike the lack of preparation they gave the victims.
